Laboratory
Training
Uganda - Kanungu District,

Prior to the implementation of the
GHS eDOTS Program, IDP undertook the task of training all of the
laboratory microscopists within the District who will be responsible
for determining TB infection through the testing of sputum samples.
IDP hired a local laboratory technician, with over 20 years of
laboratory experience, to take the microscopists through two and
a half months of training. All eight of the students passed the
training with high scores, and are now prepared to properly test
TB sputum samples at their local health units.
When IDP was introduced to the Kanungu
District in 2000, there were only three health units capable of
testing TB sputum samples. Since there are over 10 health units
in the District of Kanungu, this issue was a major concern to
IDP, as TB control is impossible without sufficient testing capabilities.
