Uganda
Midwifery Program
IDP started a Ugadnan midwifery scholarship
program in 2001. The purpose of the scholarship is to identify
qualified nursing assistants who demonstrate a strong work ethic
in addition to academic qualifications. Girls who are selected
for the scholarship will be put through a 2 1/2 course at an acredited
School of Midwifery. Upon graduation, the new midwives will be
brought back to their local health units, under a three year contract,
to contribute to the improvement of maternal health services.
Uganda suffers from high rates of infant mortality due to poor
prenatal care, and increasing the pool of qualified midwives is
fundamental to reversing this unecessary suffering.
The cost of this schooling is just
USD $1,000.
